US Navy to Transfer Three F-14D Tomcats to Alabama Space Center

Aviation News – The U.S. Navy is set to transfer three surplus F-14D Tomcat fighter aircraft to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center Commission in Huntsville, Alabama, under a measure approved by the Secretary of the Navy. The transfer will support preservation and public display efforts tied to American military aviation history.

The aircraft, identified by Bureau Numbers 164341, 164602, and 159437 and one might be made flyable again, are no longer required for Navy operational use. Under the authorization, the Secretary of the Navy may convey all rights, title, and interest in the aircraft to the Commission without financial consideration. The move highlights continued efforts to preserve historically significant military aircraft for educational and museum purposes at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville.

The F-14D Tomcat was the final and most advanced variant of the iconic carrier-based fighter aircraft that served the U.S. Navy for decades before its retirement in 2006. Known for its variable-sweep wings, long-range interception capabilities, and powerful radar systems, the aircraft became one of the most recognizable fighters in naval aviation history. The transfer will allow the aircraft to be maintained for public exhibition and historical interpretation.
