Aviation News – Lufthansa Group has committed to purchasing 20 additional widebody aircraft from industry leaders Airbus and Boeing to drive the most ambitious fleet modernization in its corporate history. This strategic move aims to replace aging aircraft with state-of-the-art technology to enhance operational efficiency and sustainability.

The German aviation giant officially announced the deal on May 11, 2026, confirming a split order consisting of 10 Airbus A350-900s and 10 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. Valued at approximately $7.7 billion at list prices, this investment reinforces the group’s commitment to maintaining a competitive edge in the long-haul market.

While the group has not yet finalized which specific airlines or international hubs within its network will operate the new arrivals, the units are slated for delivery between 2032 and 2034. These aircraft are specifically intended to phase out older, less efficient long-haul jets that currently carry higher fuel and maintenance costs.

Both the A350-900 and the 787-9 Dreamliner utilize advanced carbon-composite materials and next-generation engines to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions by approximately 25% compared to previous models. This technical upgrade significantly lowers the environmental footprint of long-distance travel while providing a quieter, more comfortable cabin environment for passengers.
