Aviation News – France has confirmed it will independently finance the development of the Rafale F5 after negotiations regarding shared funding with the United Arab Emirates collapsed. This strategic pivot, integrated into the update of the Military Programming Law, ensures that Paris maintains total control over its next-generation combat aircraft.
Initially, France invited Abu Dhabi to participate in the F5 development program in exchange for financial backing. However, the partnership dissolved in late December when the UAE found itself facing significant costs without receiving the technological returns or industrial transfers they expected. Consequently, France has shifted to a self-funding model to avoid further delays in the aircraft’s evolution.
While the financial disagreement caused a temporary cooling of relations between President Emmanuel Macron and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, the broader defense alliance remains intact. The escalating regional tension, specifically involving Iran, has reinforced the partnership. France’s commitment to the security of its Gulf allies has proven its reliability, helping to repair the diplomatic friction that emerged at the end of last year.
Operationally, the French Air Force continues to play a vital role in defending Emirati airspace. French pilots are actively engaged in neutralizing Iranian Shahed drones that threaten the UAE, a task made critical by the geographical proximity of the two nations. With only 55 kilometers separating them at the Strait of Hormuz, the rapid response of French Rafale units provides a necessary shield against regional aerial threats.
