AviationNews – DHL Express and IAG Cargo have signed a landmark five-year agreement for the supply of 240 million liters of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at London Heathrow. This strategic partnership aims to drastically lower the carbon emissions generated by DHL’s air freight transported on British Airways flights.

The deal, finalized in April 2026, represents one of the largest SAF commitments in the logistics sector to date. By securing a long-term supply at a major international hub, the parties are addressing the environmental challenges of global trade. The collaboration focuses on utilizing the belly-hold capacity of British Airways aircraft to move DHL Express shipments, ensuring that time-sensitive cargo is delivered with a significantly reduced environmental footprint.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel serves as a “drop-in” solution, meaning it is compatible with existing jet engines and infrastructure without requiring expensive modifications. The 240 million liters provided under this contract will displace conventional fossil fuels, targeting a major reduction in lifecycle CO2 emissions. This technical shift is crucial for maintaining operational efficiency while meeting the increasingly stringent environmental regulations facing the aviation industry.

“This agreement is a major milestone in our journey toward net-zero emissions,” stated a spokesperson for the partnership. “By securing such a significant volume of SAF, we are not only reducing our current impact but also sending a clear signal to the market that the demand for renewable energy in aviation is reaching a critical mass.”

This partnership sets a new standard for how global logistics providers and airlines can collaborate to accelerate the energy transition. As the industry moves toward 2030 climate targets, similar large-scale contracts will be vital for stimulating SAF production and stabilizing costs. Continued investment in green technology remains the primary path forward for a sustainable aerospace sector.

The five-year pact between DHL and IAG Cargo underscores a serious commitment to decarbonization within the air freight industry. By integrating renewable fuels into daily operations at London Heathrow, the companies are paving the way for a more sustainable future in global commerce.
