AviationNews – The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) Central Operations has officially received the world’s first PC-12 PRO in an aeromedical configuration, marking a significant milestone in Australia’s remote healthcare delivery and fleet modernization efforts.
The delivery of this aircraft, which arrived in Australia this week, represents the first of five brand-new Pilatus PC-12 PRO units ordered by the RFDS. This $60 million investment is the organization’s largest aircraft upgrade program in over a decade. The acquisition strengthens a partnership between the Swiss manufacturer and the RFDS that spans more than 30 years, designed specifically to bolster emergency retrieval services across South Australia and the Northern Territory.
Technically, the PC-12 PRO builds upon the legendary reliability of its predecessor while introducing critical performance enhancements. The aircraft features a pressurized cabin exceeding nine cubic meters, allowing for the integration of intensive care equipment and medical teams. Operational utility is further optimized through an advanced avionics suite, improved battery technology for extended power usage, and a reduced empty weight that enhances overall performance. These upgrades ensure the aircraft remains capable of operating on the short, unpaved runways that define the challenging geography of the Australian outback.
“This is a proud and historic moment for the RFDS SA/NT, those we serve, and those who support us. The introduction of the PC-12 PRO affirms our commitment to innovation, safety, and the realization of public value for communities and governments alike,” stated Tony Vaughan ASM, Chief Executive of RFDS SA/NT. “The PC-12 PRO’s advanced technology, improved safety features, and enhanced aeromedical capability will directly benefit our patients, crews, and the health partners who rely on us every day.”
Looking ahead, the integration of these five new aircraft is expected to significantly improve the speed and safety of aeromedical evacuations throughout the country’s most isolated regions. By continuously upgrading its fleet with the latest aviation technology, the RFDS ensures that residents in rural and remote Australia maintain access to world-class life-saving care, regardless of their location.
The arrival of the first PC-12 PRO marks the beginning of a transformative era for the RFDS, setting a new standard for air ambulance capabilities in challenging environments. As the remaining units enter service throughout 2026, the organization remains poised to uphold its mission of delivering critical healthcare to the furthest corners of the nation.
