Loganair and BETA Technologies have commenced a landmark series of demonstration flights using the ALIA CTOL electric aircraft to modernize mail delivery across the United Kingdom. This initiative specifically evaluates how the Royal Mail can integrate electric aviation into its essential daily services to reach remote Scottish communities.

The flight program officially took flight on March 20, 2026, with an inaugural journey from Glasgow to Dundee. Additional trials are scheduled to connect key hubs including Aberdeen, Inverness, Wick, and Orkney. This partnership aims to transition traditional logistics into a more sustainable model by testing the aircraft under real-world conditions in the challenging geography of the Scottish Highlands and Islands.

During these trials, the aircraft carries representative letters and parcels to replicate the high-frequency daily mail flights currently operated by Loganair. By mirroring existing schedules, the teams can gather critical data on how zero-emission technology performs during time-sensitive operations. The selection of the ALIA platform marks a significant step in the UK’s broader goal to decarbonize regional transport and logistics.

The ALIA CTOL is designed for high efficiency, featuring a payload capacity of up to 560kg and a proven range of 336 nautical miles. A key technical advantage is its ability to utilize existing runways, requiring no specialized airport overhauls. Furthermore, BETA’s proprietary fast-charging system allows the aircraft to fully recharge in just 20 to 40 minutes, minimizing downtime between regional legs.
