Airbus and TNO Achieve Breakthrough in Laser-Based In-Flight Connectivity

AviationNews – Airbus and Dutch research organization TNO have successfully established a high-speed, stable laser communication link between an aircraft and a geostationary satellite, marking a significant milestone for secure, long-distance data transmission.

The successful test campaign, conducted in December, achieved robust data transmission speeds of 2.6 Gbps over an optical connection. This achievement is the culmination of a collaborative effort launched in 2021 under the European Space Agency’s (ESA) ScyLight program. The initiative aims to develop next-generation communication technology that utilizes lasers and quantum techniques to enable faster, more secure, and highly efficient data exchange between space and Earth.

The operation relies on the “UltraAir” terminal, a sophisticated module mounted on the aircraft that beams precise lasers directly at satellites. Maintaining a stable connection is an immense engineering challenge, as the system must counteract the aircraft’s constant movements, vibrations, and atmospheric disturbances in real-time. By utilizing advanced closed-loop tracking technology, the team successfully demonstrated that they could maintain a high-bandwidth, error-free link even while the aircraft was in motion.

“This breakthrough proves that the European industry delivers technology with strategic global impact,” stated Kees Buijsrogge, Director of Space at TNO. “Secure laser communication is essential for both defense operations and civilian connectivity. By leading in this field, we strengthen Europe’s security and autonomy.”

In the immediate future, this technology will be deployed primarily for military applications, as the highly focused laser beam is significantly more difficult to intercept or disrupt compared to traditional radio-frequency satellite connections. However, the long-term outlook points toward the commercial aviation sector. As the technology matures, it promises to solve the common frustration of sluggish cabin Wi-Fi, eventually enabling high-quality, high-speed internet access for passengers on commercial flights.
