AviationNews – Belgium is set to deploy advanced NASAMS air defense systems to safeguard the Port of Antwerp, Europe’s second-busiest logistics hub, in response to a surge in unidentified drone incursions over critical infrastructure.
The strategic decision follows a year of heightened security concerns throughout 2025, during which mysterious drone sightings near military bases, nuclear power plants, and chemical terminals prompted temporary shutdowns and nationwide alerts. Prime Minister Bart De Wever confirmed the procurement, underscoring that this initiative is a vital step in reinforcing Belgium’s national sovereignty. The acquisition, which involves a joint procurement effort with Luxembourg, represents a significant upgrade to a defense infrastructure that has faced challenges in managing modern, low-altitude aerial threats.
The NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System), a proven Norwegian-American platform, will provide a layered defense capability. Each of the ten planned batteries features four launchers capable of engaging a wide array of threats, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), cruise missiles, and rotary-wing aircraft. Beyond the primary NASAMS deployment, the Belgian government has also invested €50 million in specialized anti-drone measures. This supplementary shield includes the integration of “Blaze” interceptor drones, developed by Lithuania’s Origin Robotics, and the deployment of “Piorun” man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS) to special operations units, ensuring a multifaceted response to airspace violations.
“Securing our logistical lifeline is a non-negotiable priority for this government,” a government spokesperson stated. “The deployment of NASAMS provides our nation with the high-precision capability required to deter and neutralize unauthorized aerial activity, ensuring the safety of our industrial heartland and the continuity of European supply chains.”
The first phase of the system is scheduled to become operational in 2027, initially covering approximately two-thirds of the Port of Antwerp. Looking ahead, defense officials anticipate that subsequent phases will extend the protective umbrella to include the entire port perimeter and other nearby strategic facilities. This timeline marks a rapid transition from initial procurement to operational status, reflecting the urgency with which the Belgian military is addressing the evolving landscape of aerial warfare.
