AviationNews – Turkey is rapidly advancing its national combat aircraft program, with Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) completing two new Kaan prototypes, designated P1 and P2, set to begin critical flight testing throughout 2026.
The unveiling of these advanced airframes follows a high-profile visit by Haluk Görgün, President of the Secretariat of Defense Industries (SSB), to TAI’s production facilities. The Kaan project has become a cornerstone of Turkey’s defense strategy and a symbol of industrial independence, gaining renewed urgency after the nation was removed from the F-35 program in 2020. This latest milestone marks a transition from proof-of-concept to rigorous performance validation as Ankara aims to modernize its aging air fleet with indigenous technology.
The new P1 and P2 variants feature significant design refinements over the initial “P0” prototype, including a reworked fuselage and optimized engine air intakes to enhance stealth and aerodynamic efficiency. These prototypes also introduce a revised landing gear configuration that creates additional volume for internal and external weapon bays. On the technological front, the aircraft is equipped with the Tulgar helmet-mounted display (HMD), a key fifth-generation feature that provides pilots with superior sensor fusion and situational awareness in high-intensity combat environments.
“The rollout of these aircraft represents far more than just a technical milestone; it is a testament to Turkey’s engineering prowess,” stated Haluk Görgün during the presentation. “Kaan is a symbol of our strategic autonomy, designed to ensure our Air Force operates with domestically produced systems that offer low observability and advanced electronic warfare capabilities.”
Looking ahead, the program’s roadmap involves simultaneous development and static testing to accelerate the transition to serial production. If testing milestones are met in 2026, Turkey plans to begin deliveries of the first operational units by the late 2020s, positioning itself as a major player in the global defense market.
The Kaan program represents a decisive step toward Turkey’s goal of defense self-sufficiency and high-tech sovereignty. With two new prototypes ready for the skies in 2026, the project is on track to redefine the region’s aerial balance of power and establish Turkey among an elite group of nations capable of producing fifth-generation stealth fighters.
