AviationNews – The Danish Ministry of Defence has officially established a new specialized unit, Eskader 729, to operate four MQ-9B long-range drones, significantly enhancing security monitoring across the Arctic, North Atlantic, and Baltic regions.
Based at the Aalborg Air Base under the Air Transport Wing, this strategic initiative marks a major reinforcement of Denmark’s presence in high-priority security zones. The selection of the MQ-9B systems follows a comprehensive defense strategy aimed at safeguarding sovereign territories, with the first deliveries of the unmanned aircraft scheduled to commence in 2028.
Technically, the MQ-9B is designed for extreme endurance, capable of remaining airborne for up to 24 hours. This allows for persistent maritime surveillance and reconnaissance in remote areas like Greenland, where traditional manned flights are logistically challenging. Although classified as unmanned, these aircraft are remotely piloted from ground stations and will operate within shared civilian airspace, maintaining constant communication with air traffic control to ensure flight safety.
“The introduction of these drones is a vital step in modernizing our intelligence and reconnaissance capabilities in the North,” a defense official noted regarding the project. “This technology allows us to maintain a constant eye on vast maritime areas, ensuring both security and rapid response for environmental and rescue missions.”
Looking ahead, the Danish Air Force will focus on intensive personnel recruitment and the development of specialized infrastructure to support full operational capacity. Beyond military intelligence, the drones are expected to play a critical role in environmental monitoring and search and rescue operations, providing a versatile tool for regional stability.
The establishment of Eskader 729 and the acquisition of the MQ-9B fleet represent a transformative shift in Denmark’s northern defense posture. By 2028, these systems will provide an unprecedented level of situational awareness, ensuring the Arctic remains a monitored and secure environment for years to come.
