Aviation News – A former US Air Force officer has been arrested on federal charges for allegedly providing unauthorized combat aircraft training to aviators from the Chinese military. The arrest of 65-year-old Gerald Eddie Brown Jr. marks the latest legal action in a broader US crackdown on Beijing’s efforts to acquire Western tactical airpower expertise.

Federal prosecutors allege that Brown conspired with foreign nationals and other US persons from at least August 2023 to provide defense services to the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). The Department of Justice (DoJ) filed the criminal complaint in the Southern District of Indiana, leading to Brown’s arrest in Jeffersonville on February 26, 2026. This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding the illicit transfer of sensitive military methodologies to foreign adversaries.

Under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), specialized combat maneuvers and flight training are classified as defense services. Providing such expertise to a foreign military requires an explicit license from the State Department, which investigators claim Brown never obtained. This legal framework exists to prevent the erosion of technological and tactical advantages maintained by the United States and its allies.
