General Atomics AeroTec Systems (GA-ATS) has unveiled its next-generation Do228 NXT aircraft at the Navy Tech 2026 conference in Sweden, positioned as a versatile solution for maritime surveillance. This deployment marks a strategic move to address evolving naval threats in the North and Baltic Seas through advanced aerial reconnaissance technology.
The official debut took place in Gothenburg, where GA-ATS joined Scandinavia’s premier naval defense summit held from February 3-5, 2026. The Do228 NXT is designed to build upon the aircraft’s decades-long history in the region, where it has served operators in all five Scandinavian nations since 1982. This latest iteration is specifically tailored for border guards, military agencies, and environmental authorities who require a high-performance platform capable of multi-role operations in challenging maritime environments.
Technically, the aircraft features a unique rectangular fuselage that provides a spacious cabin for specialized equipment and personnel. It is equipped with four wing hardpoints for the flexible integration of various sensor pods, making it adaptable for missions ranging from underwater infrastructure protection to pollution detection. A critical operational highlight is its in-flight openable roller door, which allows crews to safely deploy life rafts and rescue gear during emergency search and rescue (SAR) missions over open water.
