Somon Air Places Largest Aircraft Order to Expand Global Network

Somon Air committed to place its largest-ever order, selecting up to 14 fuel-efficient 787 Dreamliner and 737 MAX airplanes.

Aviation News – Somon Air has announced its largest-ever aircraft order, selecting up to 14 Boeing 787 Dreamliner and 737 MAX jets to support major international route expansion and fleet modernization.

The Tajikistan national carrier, which currently operates six Boeing 737 Next-Generation aircraft across 25 destinations in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, will introduce widebody aircraft for the first time under this agreement. The proposed purchase includes up to four 787-9 Dreamliners and up to ten 737-8 aircraft, marking a significant strategic shift for the airline.

The 787-9 will enable Somon Air to launch long-haul routes from Dushanbe to new intercontinental markets, offering greater passenger comfort and increased range. Meanwhile, the 737-8 will modernize the airline’s existing narrow-body fleet and support efficiency across regional routes. Both aircraft types offer 20–25% improved fuel use compared to the models they replace, lowering operational and maintenance costs.

“Expanding our fleet with these fuel-efficient airplanes is an important step in strengthening connectivity for Tajikistan,” a Somon Air spokesperson said. “These new aircraft will enhance passenger experience while supporting our long-term growth ambitions.”

The expansion positions Somon Air to boost international tourism, improve regional access, and compete more effectively in global markets. The airline is expected to introduce the new aircraft in phases, aligning growth with new routes and passenger demand.

Somon Air’s decision signals a new era of modernization and international reach, positioning the carrier as a rising presence in Central Asian aviation with a stronger long-haul footprint ahead.
