Aviation News – Embraer, Saab and the Brazilian Air Force have completed the certification flight test campaign enabling the Gripen E fighter to refuel in flight from the KC-390 Millennium, strengthening Brazil’s operational flexibility and airpower reach.
The campaign marked a coordinated effort between Brazilian and Swedish industry partners and the FAB to qualify the Gripen E as an in-flight refuelling receiver. The tests also evaluated full compatibility between the fighter and the KC-390 across the aircraft’s operational flight envelope, including high-speed refuelling under day and night conditions.
The programme validated the Gripen E’s stability, structural performance and handling during refuelling, while confirming that the KC-390 can support the fighter’s operational tempo. The achievement enhances interoperability between two of Brazil’s most advanced aircraft and expands the FAB’s ability to conduct long-range missions and rapid-response operations.
With certification completed, Brazil moves closer to fully integrating the Gripen E into its frontline fleet, supported by the KC-390’s expanding operational roles. The combination is expected to boost strategic mobility, fighter endurance and joint mission planning.
The successful test campaign positions the FAB to leverage a more agile, modern and interoperable force. As both programmes continue to mature, Brazil’s air capabilities are set to benefit from enhanced reach, improved efficiency and a stronger technological foundation.
