Electric Air Taxi Race Heats Up: Archer Buys Rival Lilium’s Core Patents for €18 Million

Lilium Jet eVTOL

AviationNews – US-based air taxi developer Archer Aviation has dramatically expanded its technological dominance in the electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) sector by acquiring the patent portfolio of defunct German rival Lilium GmbH for €18 million. The strategic purchase bolsters Archer’s intellectual property (IP) arsenal with core technologies developed by one of Europe’s former leading eVTOL pioneers, signaling a major consolidation within the rapidly evolving advanced air mobility (AAM) market.

The acquisition, announced on October 15, follows a competitive bidding process held in the wake of Lilium’s insolvency. Archer secured approximately 300 advanced air mobility patent assets from the German manufacturer, which had invested over $1.5 billion in its visionary eVTOL platform since 2015. The portfolio includes key innovations in high-voltage systems, battery management, advanced aircraft design, and what is believed to be the world’s leading IP on ducted fan technology. The transaction immediately increases Archer’s global patent holdings to over 1,000 assets.

Lilium’s ducted fan system, a hallmark of its unique seven-seater Lilium Jet design, is especially valuable as it typically offers higher efficiency and lower noise compared to open-rotor designs. Archer plans to integrate these ducted fan patents and other high-voltage system innovations into its future product roadmap, potentially expanding its aircraft offerings beyond the urban air taxi space into the light-sport and regional air mobility sectors. The move also helps cement Archer’s position against global competitors, reinforcing the US lead in critical eVTOL technology.

“Lilium’s pioneering work advanced the frontier of eVTOL design and technology, and we’re excited to bring their cutting-edge technologies into the fold at Archer as we advance our product roadmap,” stated Adam Goldstein, Founder and CEO of Archer.

This strategic move places Archer in an advantageous position as the industry races toward commercialization and prepares for new regulatory frameworks. By securing Lilium’s core IP, Archer gains both offensive and defensive patent capabilities, which are crucial for attracting future investment, streamlining certification efforts, and accelerating its competitive edge in what is fast becoming a winner-takes-all market.

The acquisition of Lilium’s core assets by a major US competitor underscores a pivotal moment of consolidation in AAM, indicating that the focus is shifting from pure development to patent control and market readiness. Archer is now better equipped to bring its eVTOL aircraft, such as the Midnight air taxi, to commercial reality, while also holding the keys to technology that could define the next generation of electric aircraft design.
