The Czech Air Force will replace its Saab Gripen fleet with 24 advanced Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightnings II fighter jets, marking a significant step in modernizing its defense capabilities.

The Czech government finalized its decision in early September 2025, committing to the Lockheed Martin F-35 program after years of evaluation. The new aircraft will replace the Swedish-made Gripen jets, which have served the country’s air force since the mid-2000s. Officials highlighted the move as part of a broader effort to align with NATO partners and strengthen national security.

The F-35, widely regarded as one of the most advanced multirole fighters, brings stealth technology, cutting-edge sensors, and advanced weapons integration. Its introduction is expected to boost operational effectiveness, giving the Czech Air Force a decisive edge in both defensive and allied missions.

“By choosing the F-35A, the Czech Republic ensures that its pilots will operate one of the most capable aircraft in the world, strengthening both national and NATO defense,” a defense ministry spokesperson said.

Deliveries are expected to start later this decade, with pilots and ground crews beginning training ahead of the fleet’s full operational readiness. Defense officials described the acquisition as a long-term investment that will secure air power for decades.

The Czech Republic’s decision underscores the growing importance of the F-35A among NATO members. With its arrival, the nation transitions to the next generation of air defense, ensuring interoperability with key allies and reaffirming its commitment to collective security.
