AviationNews – (Video below) On August 12, 2025, marking the 113th anniversary of Russia’s Air and Space Forces, the Ural Works of Civil Aviation (UZGA) dropped a test video of its latest pride-and-joy: the UTS-800 turboprop trainer—a sleek, agile, and cost-savvy aircraft aimed at shaping up the next generation of pilots.
Here’s what makes it stand out:
Purpose-Built for Training: Tailored for initial pilot training, cadet selection, and orientation, the UTS-800 merges agility with economy, offering a modern alternative to outdated jet trainers.
Homegrown Engineering with Punch: A “Russified” variant of the Diamond Aircraft DART-450, the UTS-800 is powered by a Klimov VK-800SM turboprop engine (805–806 hp), a domestically produced powerhouse replacing the initial GE H80.
First Flights & Flight Trials: The prototype lifted off back in October 2023, and on December 28, 2024, two serial UTS-800s (tail numbers 06 and 07) were formally handed over to the Russian Ministry of Defence to begin flight testing.
Safety Built-In: The KSAP-800 emergency escape system—equipped with reliable K-93 zero-zero ejection seats—successfully passed ground testing this year. It offers both simultaneous and sequential ejection modes, ensuring crew survival at zero altitude and airspeed (“zero-zero”).
Ready for the Field: Designed with operational efficiency in mind, the UTS-800 features modern avionics, easy maintenance access, and a robust digital infrastructure. It simplifies preflight setup and cuts turnaround times.
Impressive Specs:
- Max speed: ~460 km/h
- Cruise speed: ~350–360 km/h
- Service ceiling: up to ~6,000–8,000 m
- Range: 1,200–1,800 km (depending on fuel and load).
Flying Abroad: UZGA chose the IDEX 2025 defense expo in Abu Dhabi to unveil an export version of the UTS-800—a move signaling ambitions beyond Russia’s airspace.
