First “Pereh” CH-53K for Israel Moves Into Assembly—A Giant Leap for the IAF

Lockheed Martin-Sikorsky has officially kicked off the assembly of the first CH-53K “Pereh” heavy-lift helicopter tailored for the Israeli Air Force. The confirmation came via Israel’s Ministry of Defense on social media, marking the beginning of a pivotal upgrade in the IAF’s airlift strength.

This contract—sealed in late 2021 under the U.S. Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program—covers 12 of these powerhouses in a deal worth around US $2 billion. So far, Sikorsky has taken delivery of the cockpit and cabin sections of the first helicopter, moving them into final assembly at their facilities in Connecticut.

Though initial predictions had the first arrival in 2026, current schedules now place its Israeli debut in 2028.

What Makes the “Pereh” a Game-Changer?

The CH-53K “Pereh” isn’t just a replacement—it’s a total upgrade. Key highlights include:

  • Up to 3× the payload of the older CH-53D “Yas’ur” models, letting the IAF lift heavier gear—think armored vehicles and equipment—with ease.
  • Capable of external sling load up to 12.2 tonnes, a maximum takeoff weight near 39.9 tonnes, a cruising speed around 315 km/h, and a combat radius of 200 km—all powered by GE38-1B engines.
  • Fly-by-wire controls, a wider cabin, and digital cockpit and management systems boost safety, efficiency, and pilot comfort.
