Aviation News – EHang has showcased its EH216-S pilotless passenger-carrying eVTOL aircraft in Madrid during the FIA Sustainable Innovation Series, extending traditional motorsport engineering into the skies. The landmark flight brings autonomous advanced air mobility directly to a global audience during Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix week.
The public flight demonstration took place on September 9, 2026, at the historic Circuito de Madrid Jarama–RACE during a welcome event organized by Fundación RACE. The event forms a core component of the broader FIA Sustainable Innovation Series, an initiative led by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile. By convening global leaders across motorsport, technology, industry, and government, the platform aims to adapt high-performance track technologies into practical, zero-emission urban transport solutions.
During the showcase, the EH216-S aircraft performed an autonomous flight directly over the iconic Jarama circuit. The flight symbolically merged track, road, and airspace into a single operational frame, illustrating how autonomous electric flight can expand mobility into the third dimension. Industry observers witnessed the traditional “race-to-road” innovation model transition into a “race-to-sky” approach, proving the viability of autonomous passenger transport in complex European airspace.
The EHang EH216-S is a fully electric vertical take-off and landing platform designed for point-to-point urban transit. The aircraft relies on autonomous flight control systems, distributed electric propulsion, and centralized command infrastructure to eliminate the need for an onboard pilot. This technical architecture reduces human error, lowers operational noise, and delivers localized zero-emission passenger transport suitable for dense metropolitan areas.
