Fatal Incident Temporarily Shuts Down Bergamo Airport After Man Pulled Into Jet Engine

Aviation News – July 8, 2025 – Operations at Bergamo Airport in northern Italy were temporarily suspended on Tuesday following a tragic and disturbing incident on the runway. A man lost his life after being pulled into the engine of a moving Airbus A319 of Volotea.

The airport confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that all air traffic to and from Milan-Bergamo was halted between 10:20 AM and 12:00 PM local time, citing an unspecified “problem” that occurred while a plane was taxiing.

According to Italy’s ANSA news agency, the fatal accident involved a Volotea A319 that was preparing for departure when the man was drawn into one of the running engines.

A spokesperson for the airport later confirmed to Reuters that the man had died. The victim was neither a passenger nor an airport employee.

Italian authorities have launched an investigation into the incident to determine how the individual ended up on the runway in close proximity to the aircraft.

Flight operations resumed at noon after a brief suspension.
