Redstone Arsenal, Alabama – June 2025 – The U.S. Army has officially accepted delivery of its first MV-75 Future Long Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) virtual prototype (VP), a significant step forward in the development of next-generation aviation technology.
Bell Textron, the prime contractor and original equipment manufacturer for the FLRAA program, is responsible for delivering two virtual prototypes. The second VP is expected to be handed over to the Army later this month at the Aviation Center of Excellence.
“This delivery showcases how digital engineering is revolutionizing aircraft development,” said Brig. Gen. David Phillips, Program Executive Officer for Army Aviation. “The strong support from Army leadership, the Department of Defense, and Congress has enabled us to accelerate the FLRAA program and deliver advanced aviation solutions to Soldiers faster than ever.”
The virtual prototypes were developed using an agile acquisition strategy through the Middle Tier of Acquisition’s rapid prototyping pathway. Following the successful completion of the Milestone B review in June 2024, the program progressed into the Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) phase, a key stage in the lifecycle of a major defense acquisition.
The MV-75 FLRAA virtual prototype is a sophisticated simulation tool built on a digital twin of the aircraft. It plays a crucial role in informing early design refinements, supporting software development, integration, and testing processes. Additionally, the VP enables experimentation with tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) in collaboration with Soldiers during Special User Evaluations. The insights gathered from these Soldier assessments will continue to influence the aircraft’s final design. The prototypes are also upgradeable into flight training devices to support future pilot training needs.
“We’re proud to achieve this important milestone,” said Col. Jeffrey Poquette, Project Manager for FLRAA. “Our virtual prototype provides a direct path to delivering a next-generation, multi-mission platform that will transform how the Army conducts long-range assault missions.”
