Pakistan Becomes First Foreign Customer of Chinese J-35 Stealth Fighter

Pakistan has agreed to purchase up to 40 Chinese J-35 fighter jets, becoming the first international buyer of China’s latest stealth aircraft.

The J-35A was first publicly unveiled in 2024 at the Zhuhai Airshow and is widely considered China’s answer to the American F-35. Pakistan’s decision to acquire the aircraft comes after favorable experiences with the Chinese-made J-10, which was previously deployed during border incidents with India. According to Pakistani sources, that deployment boosted trust in Chinese combat aircraft. The manufacturer, Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, has reportedly fast-tracked the delivery schedule for Pakistan and offered a discount.

The deal is part of a broader modernization initiative by the Pakistani military and also includes KJ-500 airborne early warning and control (AWACS) aircraft and HQ-19 air defense systems. The Pakistani Ministry of Defense confirmed that the first group of pilots has already begun training in China. The initial aircraft deliveries are expected within two months.

Pakistani media emphasize that rising tensions with India played a key role in the decision to procure the J-35. Concerns are growing in New Delhi that the introduction of the J-35A could further shift the regional military balance. Analysts predict that India may now accelerate efforts to develop or acquire a fifth-generation fighter of its own.

Combat Report

Last month, Pakistani J-10s reportedly shot down at least five Indian aircraft, including three Rafale jets, one Sukhoi, and one MiG, according to various sources. An Israeli reconnaissance drone was also said to have been destroyed. This recent military action likely reinforced Pakistan’s confidence in expanding its collaboration with China’s aviation industry.
