Aviation News – A Windracers ULTRA autonomous aircraft owned by Purdue University completed a historic beyond visual line of sight flight across the newly created Indiana Drone Corridor.
The milestone flight covered over 50 miles within the 200-plus-mile corridor on October 29, 2026, coinciding with the grand opening event at Terre Haute Indiana Airport. Indiana Governor Mike Braun, U.S. Senator Todd Young, and U.S. Representative Mark Messmer attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony to witness an operational demonstration of autonomous cargo delivery. The successful deployment highlights the growing integration of unmanned aviation systems into regional transportation infrastructure.
Developed by British dual-use heavy-lift specialist Windracers, the ULTRA aircraft features an aluminum airframe spanning 33 feet and utilizes a proprietary flight control system for fully autonomous operations. Equipped with a versatile three-bay drop-door configuration, the platform demonstrated precision cargo deployment via an autonomous parachute resupply display during the inaugural event. This capability positions the heavy-lift drone as a vital asset for emergency logistics, humanitarian aid, and remote cargo transport.
Company representatives emphasize that scaling long-range beyond visual line of sight operations unlocks unprecedented efficiency for commercial and defense logistics networks worldwide.
