Aviation News – NASA has officially unveiled its newest experimental aircraft, the X-70 Fractal, during the UP.Summit at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, introducing a high-performance crewed research platform built to fast-track advanced aviation technologies.
The aircraft emerged from development as a modular, adaptable vehicle intended to expand the boundaries of aerospace engineering. Developed by NASA, the project was publicly introduced on Wednesday to address the growing demand for rapid flight-testing platforms that can bridge theoretical concepts and real-world application.
Operationally, the X-70 features rapidly reconfigurable flight-control technology and accommodates up to 2,000 pounds of experimental payloads across internal and external bays. It has a maximum takeoff weight of 10,000 pounds, a cruising speed of Mach 0.75, a ceiling of 45,000 feet, and an operational range exceeding 1,726 miles.
“The X-70 Fractal gives NASA a crewed, high-performance platform to test advanced flight-control, maneuverability, and other cutting-edge technologies in real flight,” said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman.
The introduction of the X-70 establishes a flexible testing pipeline designed to keep engineering teams transitioning smoothly between multiple flight experiments. With its first flight anticipated within the next two years, the aircraft marks a modern chapter in aeronautical innovation that aims to sustain American leadership in experimental flight research.
