Aviation News – France’s Directorate-General for Armament (DGA) has awarded the CASSIOPÉE contract to Airbus Defence and Space and co-contractor Unseenlabs to renew the nation’s sovereign space-based signal intelligence capability. Announced by Catherine Vautrin, Minister for the Armed Forces and Veterans’ Affairs, at the International Space Summit, the agreement secures France’s military intelligence capabilities well into the next decade.
The CASSIOPÉE space intelligence system serves as the strategic core of the broader CELESTE (Space Electromagnetic Capability) programme. Under the agreement, prime contractor Airbus handles system integration, ground control centers, and satellite manufacturing utilizing its advanced S250 platform. Co-contractor Unseenlabs delivers specialized payload technology, mission planning tools, and on-board data processing systems. Scheduled to become fully operational by 2032, the new network directly succeeds the existing CERES satellite constellation to preserve uninterrupted operational intelligence.
By modernizing France’s orbital surveillance assets, the system enhances performance capabilities across electromagnetic spectrum monitoring. Airbus adapts its proven S250 satellite architecture, recently deployed for the CO3D constellation, to provide a agile space frame. Meanwhile, Unseenlabs embeds innovative processing payloads on board, enabling faster detection and real-time data analysis directly from orbit. This technical combination drastically reduces response times, providing military commanders with superior situational awareness.
