Aviation News – AirAsia X has reaffirmed plans to launch a new hub in Bahrain this June, despite ongoing regional tensions that could still affect the project’s timeline.
The Malaysia-based low-cost long-haul carrier AirAsia X first announced in February its intention to establish its first hub outside Asia, linking Kuala Lumpur with London via Bahrain. The airline scheduled the inaugural service for June 26, positioning the hub as a strategic midpoint between Asia and Europe. However, the plan comes as geopolitical instability continues to affect parts of the Middle East.
The proposed hub would enable long-haul connectivity using a stopover model, allowing AirAsia X to extend its network reach while maintaining cost efficiency. By routing flights through Bahrain, the airline aims to optimize aircraft utilization and tap into transit passenger demand between Southeast Asia and Europe.
A spokesperson for AirAsia X stated that the Bahrain hub strategy remains a key milestone in the airline’s expansion plans, adding: “We are committed to launching this hub as scheduled, but we continue to monitor the regional situation closely to ensure operational safety and stability.”
Looking ahead, the success of the Bahrain hub could pave the way for further international expansion beyond Asia, potentially establishing additional transit points in other regions. However, the airline’s cautious stance reflects broader industry concerns about operating in geopolitically sensitive areas.
If launched as planned, the Bahrain hub will mark a significant step in AirAsia X’s post-pandemic recovery and growth strategy. While uncertainties remain, the project highlights the airline’s ambition to re-enter the competitive Europe-Asia corridor and strengthen its position in the long-haul low-cost market.
