Operating under the 42 Squadron (Torpedo Bomber), the deployment involves two Poseidon aircraft tasked with navigating an unfamiliar and challenging operational environment. This training follows the UK’s long-term commitment to the P-8A platform, which was selected to close the gap in maritime surveillance following the retirement of the Nimrod fleet. By utilizing the facilities in Iceland, the RAF is testing its ability to sustain long-range missions far from its home base at RAF Lossiemouth, ensuring readiness for real-world scenarios.
