Aviation News – An Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) Bell 407 Ranger helicopter crashed while providing tactical air support during an active shooter incident near Flagstaff on February 4, 2026, killing both crew members on board and prompting state and federal investigations.
The aircraft, identified as Bell 407 serial N56AZ, had been assisting the Flagstaff Police Department and other law enforcement agencies during the evening emergency response. Authorities said the helicopter went down during the operation, resulting in the deaths of the pilot and a trooper/paramedic. Their identities have not yet been released. Earlier in the incident, officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect, who sustained non-fatal injuries and was taken into custody. No additional injuries were reported. The AZDPS Major Incident Division is leading the shooting investigation, while the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are jointly examining the crash.
