Aviation News – Belgian Defence Ministry Probes Drone Sightings Over Key Sites
The Belgian Ministry of Defence is investigating possible espionage after multiple drones were spotted over the Kleine-Brogel Air Base and near the airports of Deurne and Ostend on Saturday evening. The incident has raised national security concerns ahead of an upcoming cabinet discussion on counter-drone measures.
On Saturday around 18:30, three drones were observed flying over the Kleine-Brogel air force base, home to several sensitive military operations. According to Defence Minister Theo Francken (N-VA), similar drone activity may have occurred near civilian airports in Deurne and Ostend. The sightings prompted immediate police intervention, including the deployment of a helicopter to pursue the drones, which reportedly flew toward the Dutch border. The operators remain unidentified.
Kleine-Brogel is one of Belgium’s most strategically important air bases, often associated with NATO operations and military assets. The presence of unregistered drones near the site poses potential risks to both security and airspace integrity. Belgian authorities are evaluating the use of advanced detection and neutralization technologies to strengthen counter-drone capabilities.
“This incident underscores the urgent need to accelerate Belgium’s counter-drone strategy,” said Defence Minister Theo Francken. “Protecting sensitive infrastructure from unauthorized aerial activity is a top priority for our national security.”
The Belgian Council of Ministers is expected to review and advance its “counter-drone dossier” this Friday, focusing on enhanced surveillance systems and international coordination. The investigation into the recent drone incursions is ongoing.
As drone technology becomes more accessible, incidents like this highlight the growing need for robust airspace protection measures across Europe. Belgian authorities are expected to tighten regulations and accelerate the deployment of counter-drone systems in the coming months.
