France Inaugurates First Military Space Air Base to Bolster Sovereignty in Orbit

Aviation News, July 6, 2025 – France has officially launched its first military space air base, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s strategy to enhance sovereignty and readiness in an increasingly contested space domain.

Air Base 101 Toulouse, now designated a Base Aérienne à Vocation Spatiale (BAVS), will function as the central operational command for French military space activities.

The formal inauguration took place in Place du Capitole, Toulouse’s historic main square and a symbolic center for French aerospace and space research. The base, originally closed during defense restructuring in 2008, has been reactivated at a new location: the Toulouse Space Center of CNES (France’s National Centre for Space Studies). While the base retains its original number, its mission has transformed dramatically—from traditional aircrew training to commanding space-based defense operations.

“This is a day that will be remembered in the history of our armed forces,” said General Jérôme Bellanger, Chief of Staff of the French Air and Space Force.

In tribute to France’s aerospace heritage, General Robert Aubinière—a World War II hero and the founding director of CNES—has been named the base’s symbolic patron. His dual legacy in aviation and space underscores the new identity of BAVS, where military tradition intersects with cutting-edge space defense.

France has been steadily building a stronger space defense posture. In 2019, President Emmanuel Macron announced the formation of Commandement de l’Espace (CDE), a dedicated Space Command operating under the newly renamed Air and Space Force. The country has since launched AsterX, an annual multinational military space exercise designed to test orbital warfare scenarios in coordination with NATO and European allies.

With the establishment of BAVS, this transformation becomes tangible. The site now houses the majority of France’s military space infrastructure, including nine specialized CDE units. Among them are the Space Operations Command and Control Center (C3OS), the Space Intelligence Center (CRIS), and the Space Actions Control Squadron (ECAS)—the latter responsible for implementing potential active counterspace capabilities.

This new base reinforces France’s commitment to protecting national and allied interests in space, positioning the country as a leading force in the realm of military space operations.
