Qantas Receives First Airbus A321XLR, Becomes Asia-Pacific Launch Operator

Qantas Airways has officially taken delivery of its first Airbus A321XLR, marking a key milestone as the airline becomes the Asia-Pacific launch customer for the next-generation single-aisle aircraft. The aircraft was handed over at Airbus’s Finkenwerder facility in Hamburg, Germany.

To demonstrate the extended range capabilities of the A321XLR, the aircraft is making its delivery flight to Sydney with just a single stop for crew rest in Bangkok.

Equipped with Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, the Qantas A321XLR features a two-class cabin layout: 20 Business Class seats and 177 in the main cabin. While the aircraft will initially be used on domestic routes across Australia, Qantas is also considering it for new international routes, particularly to secondary destinations in Asia.

Under its broader fleet modernization plan, the Qantas Group has ordered a total of 40 A321XLRs—28 assigned to Qantas and 12 to its low-cost subsidiary, Jetstar. These aircraft are part of a larger commitment to Airbus, which includes 128 single-aisle aircraft and 24 A350-1000 widebodies.

The A321XLR represents the latest evolution in the A320neo family, designed to meet growing airline demand for longer range and higher payload capacity. It offers a maximum range of up to 4,700 nautical miles, the longest of any single-aisle aircraft, and delivers 30% lower fuel burn and CO₂ emissions compared to older generation aircraft.

The aircraft is also Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) ready, capable of operating on up to 50% SAF today. Airbus aims to reach 100% SAF compatibility across its fleet by 2030.
