The Air Force Reserve is set to lose nearly half of its fighter jets by 2030, raising concerns it could be sidelined in future conflicts and worsen the military’s pilot shortage. From 2025 to 2030, the Reserve’s fighter fleet will shrink by 48%, with no clear replacements planned.
The Air Force is retiring older jets to fund modernization, prioritizing active-duty units over the Reserve and Guard. Unlike the Guard, the Reserve lacks state-level political backing. Units like the F-16 aggressor squadron at Nellis and A-10 units at several bases are scheduled to close. Fewer Reserve jets mean fewer spots for veteran pilots, deepening the pilot shortfall.
