Turkish Airlines Secures Over 300 CFM LEAP-1B Engines in Landmark Fleet Expansion Deal

AviationNews – Turkish Airlines and CFM International have signed a major Memorandum of Understanding for more than 300 LEAP-1B engines and long-term services encompassing over 600 powerplants. The landmark transaction will power the carrier’s incoming fleet of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft as the Istanbul-based airline rapidly scales its international flight network.

Finalized in Istanbul on October 16, 2026, the deal directly supports Turkish Airlines’ recent commitment for 100 firm and 50 optional Boeing 737 MAX single-aisle airliners announced in late September. The comprehensive agreement also establishes an expansive maintenance framework covering the airline group’s existing and future LEAP-1B inventory, which includes aircraft operated by its low-cost subsidiary, AJet. Crucially, the pact paves the way for maintenance arm Turkish Technic to expand domestic engine overhaul capabilities and offer specialized services to regional third-party operators.

The CFM LEAP-1B engine introduces advanced composite fan blades, ceramic matrix composites, and modern combustor technology to deliver a 15 to 20 percent improvement in fuel efficiency and carbon reductions compared to preceding CFM56 engines. These efficiency gains significantly decrease trip costs for short-to-medium-haul routes while providing lower acoustic signatures for airport communities. The extensive long-term service agreement will further optimize engine on-wing time and protect residual asset values through predictive maintenance data and streamlined supply chain support.

“This new step with CFM will support our growing fleet, network, and operational efficiency,” said Prof. Murat Şeker, Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee of Turkish Airlines. “We are also pleased to strengthen our partnership with CFM through a comprehensive set of services, providing the expertise, reliability, and long-term support needed to develop our LEAP MRO capabilities alongside a long-standing partner.”

The large-scale acquisition serves as a central pillar in Turkish Airlines’ long-term strategy to expand its operational fleet beyond 800 aircraft over the coming decade. As airline capacity rebounds and competition across global hubs intensifies, securing guaranteed engine delivery slots and domestic overhaul infrastructure ensures operational self-reliance and shields the carrier from global supply chain bottlenecks.

By locking in advanced propulsion technology and domestic maintenance support, Turkish Airlines firmly cements its position among the world’s most aggressive aviation powerhouses. The multi-tiered alliance with CFM International promises to drive reliable network growth while advancing sustainability and technical expertise across the Turkish aerospace sector
