Aviation News – Boeing has released its 2026 World Air Cargo Forecast, projecting that global air cargo traffic will double over the next two decades, pushing the worldwide freighter fleet past 4,000 airplanes by 2045.

The biannual forecast was unveiled at The International Air Cargo Association’s Air Cargo Forum in Miami, providing a comprehensive look at major air trade markets and long-term industry trends. This growth projection comes on the heels of a record-breaking year, as global air cargo traffic reached a new annual milestone in 2025 by growing nearly 5% year over year despite ongoing trade volatility and geopolitical disruptions.

Modern air cargo networks are actively adapting to changing trade flows, rerouting challenges, and shifting production locations while maintaining speed, reliability, and security. Key demand drivers accelerating this expansion include booming e-commerce, direct-to-consumer business models, and an unprecedented surge in demand for high-tech goods. Notably, industry data indicates that more than 70% of AI-related goods were transported by air in 2025.

“Supply-chain diversification, e-commerce, and AI-driven technology demand are driving growth and reshaping air cargo flows, requiring nearly 3,000 new and converted freighters over the next 20 years to maintain network resilience,” industry analysts noted regarding the structural evolution of the market.

Looking forward, carriers will continue redesigning route networks to manage geopolitical bottlenecks and capitalize on advanced manufacturing supply chains. This strategic evolution ensures that air freight remains an indispensable backbone of international commerce and rapid logistics.
