The arrival completes a landmark 400-million-dollar acquisition involving two former Lufthansa passenger airliners—registered as D-ABYD and D-ABYG—secured to support the strategic transition toward the new VC-25B presidential transport platforms. Stripped of its commercial airline markings before ferrying across the Atlantic, the latest four-engine jumbo jet joins an earlier sister ship transferred to American military control. While defense contractor Boeing continues intensive retrofits on the primary presidential transport airframes, the Department of Defense is systematically assembling dedicated ground infrastructure, auxiliary trainers, and sustainment reserves to ensure smooth fleet entry.
Operationally, these secondary airframes solve a critical long-term logistical dilemma caused by the permanent closure of Boeing’s commercial 747 assembly line. While the first delivered aircraft prepares flight crews, technicians, and aeromedical teams for the operational handling of the massive widebody platform, the subsequent airframe provides a strategic supply of structural components, flight-control assemblies, and General Electric GEnx-2B powerplants. By operating parallel support airframes, the military preserves flight hours on primary operational jets while establishing an immediate, on-demand replacement pipeline for mission-critical parts.
