Aviation News – Lufthansa Group has approved the conversion of options for 20 Boeing 737-10 aircraft into a firm order, marking the airline group’s first commitment to the largest variant of the 737 MAX family. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the early 2030s, supporting the group’s long-term fleet renewal plans.
The Lufthansa Group supervisory board approved the order on September 17, 2026. The agreement builds on an initial order placed in 2023 for 40 Boeing 737-8 aircraft, which included options for an additional 60 aircraft from the 737 MAX family.
In 2025, Lufthansa Group announced that the initial batch of 40 Boeing 737-8s would be assigned to Eurowings, its low-cost airline. The first aircraft from that order is expected to arrive in 2027. The group has not yet confirmed which airline will operate the newly ordered 737-10s, although the aircraft are intended to replace older-generation Airbus aircraft within the fleet.
The Boeing 737-10 is the largest member of the 737 MAX family, offering increased passenger capacity compared with smaller variants. Its modern engines and updated systems are designed to support improved fuel efficiency and lower operating emissions, making the aircraft suitable for high-demand short- and medium-haul routes.
The decision highlights Lufthansa Group’s continued investment in modernising its narrow-body fleet. While the group has not announced an airline placement for the 20 aircraft, Eurowings is considered a possible destination by aviation observers, including Scramble, given the airline’s previously announced allocation of the 737-8 fleet.
The new order extends Lufthansa Group’s commitment to the Boeing 737 MAX programme into the next decade. The aircraft will contribute to the replacement of older Airbus models, while the final operator and route network are expected to be confirmed closer to the delivery period.
