Aviation News – Airbus has secured major commitments from two leading Vietnamese carriers, signing a landmark agreement with Vietravel Airlines for 50 aircraft alongside a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with flag carrier Vietnam Airlines for five A350-900 jets. The strategic agreements strengthen bilateral economic ties and mark a significant expansion of European aviation technology in Southeast Asia.
The ceremonial exchange took place on September 10, 2026, during a high-level summit at Élysée Palace in Paris between Vietnamese President To Lam and French President Emmanuel Macron. Under the primary commercial agreement, Vietravel Airlines signed a firm deal to acquire 50 Airbus aircraft, comprising 20 A220s and 30 A321s. Concurrently, Vietnam Airlines formalized an MoU for five A350-900 wide-body aircraft, scheduled for delivery between 2033 and 2034 to support long-haul international routes beyond 2030.
The high-profile signings form part of a broader diplomatic effort to deepen economic, investment, and trade relations between France and Vietnam. For Vietravel Airlines, integrating single-aisle A220 and A321 jets significantly scales up regional and domestic transit capacity. For state-owned Vietnam Airlines, adding next-generation wide-body aircraft reinforces its existing long-haul operational strategy, allowing the carrier to expand direct long-range connections to global markets.
Technically, the A220 and A321 single-aisle platforms offer optimized fuel burn and lower carbon emissions for high-density regional routes, reducing overall operating costs for growing airlines. Meanwhile, the twin-aisle A350-900 incorporates advanced aerodynamics, carbon-fiber composite structures, and highly efficient engines to deliver unmatched payload range for intercontinental flights. Operationally, these modern platforms enhance fleet commonality, lower maintenance costs, and increase long-haul flight efficiency for Vietnamese carriers.
