Aviation News – GE Aerospace has secured a pivotal contract from the U.S. Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to develop Derecho, an air-launched hypersonic test vehicle engineered to reach speeds of Mach 5 and above. The development marks a major step forward for the Department of Defense as it seeks to accelerate airborne hypersonic evaluation capabilities through high-frequency testing.
The award funds the next major phase of the Pentagon’s Hypersonic and High-Cadence Airborne Testing Capabilities (HyCAT) program. Under the new agreement, GE Aerospace will execute full vehicle integration alongside component-level qualification testing for critical subsystems. While the defense contractor has kept the specific financial value of the contract confidential, this phase builds directly upon initial concept and subsystem design work initiated in 2023.
The Defense Innovation Unit selected GE Aerospace to address a critical bottleneck in national defense research: the lack of low-cost, repeatable hypersonic flight testing opportunities. By leveraging commercial innovation and agile prototyping, the HyCAT program aims to streamline how defense agencies gather flight data at extreme atmospheric speeds.
The air-launched Derecho platform operates using an all-up-round architecture that pairs a high-thrust rocket booster with a high-speed cruiser system. Once the booster propels the vehicle to initial supersonic thresholds, the cruiser transitions to GE Aerospace’s advanced dual-mode ramjet technology, maintaining sustained hypersonic velocities at Mach 5. The liquid-fueled vehicle functions as a modular testbed to evaluate heat-resistant materials, sensors, and flight controls in real hypersonic .

Successful integration and subsystem testing of the Derecho system will clear the path for routine hypersonic flight demonstrations in the coming years. As the military shifts toward rapid prototyping, scalable flight platforms will play a vital role in validating future hypersonic defense systems.
