Aviation News – Airbus has officially delivered the first A320neo passenger aircraft assembled at its second Final Assembly Line (FAL) in Tianjin, China. The delivery to China Eastern Airlines marks a significant expansion of the European planemaker’s global manufacturing footprint and strengthens its position in the world’s fastest-growing civil aviation market.
The milestone aircraft handed over on Wednesday highlights a deepening four-decade partnership between Airbus and China Eastern Airlines. The carrier, which currently operates the largest Airbus fleet in mainland China, originally launched its relationship with the manufacturer in 1985 after taking delivery of an A310.
Operational since last October, the second Tianjin assembly facility serves as the second line in China and Asia, bringing Airbus’s global network to ten active assembly facilities worldwide. Since establishing its first international commercial assembly site in Tianjin in 2008, Airbus has assembled and delivered over 800 A320 Family aircraft, with Chinese carriers now operating more than 2,300 Airbus jets.
The introduction of the second Tianjin facility plays a critical structural role in supporting Airbus’s global production ramp-up target of 75 A320 Family aircraft per month. By integrating state-of-the-art assembly processes directly alongside localized supply chains, the facility provides essential capacity and operational flexibility to meet surging narrowbody market demand across Asia and beyond.
“The delivery underscores Airbus’ long-term commitment to our Chinese partners and our confidence in the continuous growth of China’s civil aviation market,” stated Philippe Mhun, Executive Vice President Programmes and Services of the Commercial Aircraft business at Airbus.
The expansion in Tianjin ensures Airbus remains uniquely positioned to capture long-term demand as airlines modernize their fleets with fuel-efficient single-aisle jets. Expanding local assembly capabilities reduces delivery lead times, strengthens regional supply chain resilience, and reinforces industrial cooperation across major global markets.
The successful initial delivery from the second Tianjin line cements Airbus’s robust industrial presence and strategic commitment in China. By scaling up local production capacity, the aerospace giant effectively supports its global output targets while providing Chinese carriers with direct access to modern aircraft.
