Aviation News – The Bayraktar AKINCI Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV) has successfully achieved a direct hit on an aerial target using the SUNGUR Air Defense Missile during a recent live-fire test. Developed indigenously by Baykar and armed with Roketsan’s precision munition, this milestone marks a major step forward in expanding the platform’s air combat capabilities against airborne threats.
The high-altitude operational trial commenced as the AKINCI departed from the Çorlu Flight Training and Test Center in Tekirdağ and flew to a designated maritime test range. Operating off the coast of Sinop over the Black Sea, the UCAV tracked and engaged a target drone flying in the sky, scoring an immediate direct strike with the SUNGUR munition before safely returning to base along its planned route.
This trial reinforces the growing versatility of the AKINCI platform across varied combat scenarios. Having previously conducted successful air-to-air tests with the KEMANKEŞ 1 AI-based mini cruise missile and the EREN high-speed loitering munition, the integration of SUNGUR adds dedicated short-range air defense capabilities, expanding the drone’s indigenous munitions inventory.
By launching air-defense missiles directly from an airborne platform, the AKINCI gains an enhanced operational reach, leveraging higher initial altitudes and launch speeds to extend engagement zones. The integration complements an extensive weapons suite—spanning smart micro-munitions like the MAM series, precision guidance kits, supersonic missiles such as the IHA-230, and cruise missiles like ÇAKIR—giving operators a layered strike capability across close and long distances.
