Airbus A350F Completes Maiden Flight in Toulouse, Launching Test Campaign Ahead of 2027 Entry into Service

AviationNews – Airbus has officially entered a new era in dedicated air freight as its next-generation Airbus A350F successfully completed its maiden flight over southern France. Operating from Toulouse-Blagnac Airport, test aircraft MSN700 (registered F-WXLD) concluded a flight lasting more than four hours, clearing a decisive hurdle toward transforming the international widebody cargo market.

The aircraft lifted off from runway 14L and touched down smoothly after four hours and eleven minutes in the air, during which flight crews conducted initial handling checks and system evaluations. Airbus conceived the freighter program to challenge existing long-haul cargo monopolies, building on the commercial maturity of the twin-engine A350 platform. This inaugural sortie officially initiates a rigorous 400-hour flight test campaign across two prototype airframes—MSN700 and MSN701—designed to secure European and international type certification ahead of commercial handovers slated for the second half of 2027.

From an engineering perspective, the Airbus A350F combines a specialized forward fuselage length derived from the A350-900 with the high-capacity aft fuselage and wings of the larger A350-1000. Constructed with more than 70% advanced materials including titanium and carbon-fiber composites, the freighter features an industry-leading extra-large main deck cargo door. Powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, the design delivers up to 111 tonnes of payload capacity while burning up to 40% less fuel and generating significantly lower emissions than older-generation competing freighters.

Speaking on the operational milestone, Laurent Bussiere, Lead Flight Test Engineer for the A350F program, emphasized the aircraft’s distinctive technical profile: “The A350F presents unique dimensions due to the freighter’s specific fuselage configuration… So we need to look at the behavior of the whole system with this unique model,” noting that the inaugural mission validates years of component modeling, aerodynamic testing, and advanced simulator rehearsals.

Looking ahead, the aircraft will proceed through envelope expansion, flutter evaluations, and extreme-weather testing to demonstrate full compliance with upcoming environmental and operational cargo standards. With key commitments secured from global carriers and logistics operators such as Atlas Air, Air China Cargo, and Etihad Airways, the platform is positioned to reshape international supply chains and fleet modernizations for decades to come.

Airbus has demonstrated that its clean-sheet freighter concept is ready to deliver on its promise of lower costs and modern capacity. By achieving this first flight, the manufacturer establishes strong momentum for its certification campaign, setting the stage for commercial service to begin on schedule in 2027.
