Flying out of RAAF Base Amberley, the international tanker fleet provided critical aerial refueling to keep coalition fighters airborne across vast training areas in Australia’s Northern Territory.
Operating as the primary air mobility hub, RAAF Base Amberley hosted refueling platforms from partner nations, including the Royal Air Force, Spanish Air and Space Force, United States Air Force, and the Multinational MRTT Unit. Running from July 20 through early August 2026, the biennial exercise brought together approximately 2,500 personnel and up to 100 aircraft from 21 participating nations. The coalition tanker fleet maintained a demanding operational rhythm, executing nine sorties per day to support high-intensity, large-force air combat scenarios.
Each round-trip refueling mission covered roughly 5,500 kilometers between Queensland and the Northern Territory battlespace, accumulating a combined transit distance equivalent to orbiting the globe 15 times. The exercise marked key operational milestones, including the first mid-air refueling of Indian Air Force Dassault Rafale fighters by a RAAF KC-30A, as well as the debut of Spain’s newly acquired Airbus A330 MRTT in the Indo-Pacific exercise. Flying missions with both boom and hose-and-drogue systems, the tankers serviced diverse aircraft types—including RAAF Super Hornets, German Eurofighter Typhoons, and South Korean F-15Ks and F-16s.
