Aviation News – Aerospace prime Northrop Grumman has successfully completed a government-led critical design review for the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye Block II upgrade, clearing the way for immediate integration and system testing.

The completion of this major program milestone marks the transition from design completion to physical implementation for the most significant platform upgrade in the E-2D program history. With the design baseline validated, Northrop Grumman is proceeding directly into system testing, aiming to begin initial deliveries of Block II aircraft to fleet operators by the end of the decade.

As the centerpiece airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) platform for carrier strike groups, the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye requires continuous modernization to operate effectively in contested environments. The Block II upgrade builds upon the aircraft’s legacy radar and command capabilities by drastically improving tactical situational awareness while streamlining cockpit and operator station information management.

To maintain long-term sustainment efficiency and control life-cycle costs, Block II relies heavily on a modular open systems approach (MOSA) paired with commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and software products. Leveraging open architecture allows rapid software insertions and hardware upgrades, ensuring the platform remains resilient against evolving electronic warfare and missile threats without requiring costly structural modifications.

“Completing the Block II critical design review reflects the dedication and expertise of our team and military partners,” stated Janice Zilch, vice president and program manager for E-2D Advanced Hawkeye programs at Northrop Grumman. “This upgrade strengthens the platform’s core capability suite, reducing operator workload while laying a seamless foundation for future technology integration.”

Northrop Grumman will incorporate the Block II configuration directly into its active manufacturing line while simultaneously executing a fleet retrofit program for operational aircraft. Dual-track production and fleet modernization will accelerate the fielding of advanced command-and-control capabilities across global naval deployments.
