The Global Combat Air Programme represents a landmark trilateral defense initiative uniting the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan to jointly design and manufacture a next-generation stealth fighter jet. Originally targeted for entry into service in 2035, the aircraft is being developed to replace the Eurofighter Typhoon fleet in Europe and the Mitsubishi F-2 in Japan. Industrial delivery is spearheaded by Edgewing, a joint venture comprising Leonardo, BAE Systems, and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co. (JAIEC), operating under contract from the trilateral government agency GIGO. However, growing urgency among allied defense ministries has sparked serious discussions about pulling the deployment target forward by up to two years.
Moving up the delivery date relies on a staged capability strategy, allowing frontline air forces to field core stealth and multi-domain combat capabilities sooner while deferring secondary upgrades. “There is quite a strong push to bring forward the first entry into service of GCAP closer by a couple of years,” stated Leonardo executive leadership during a recent financial briefing. “This accelerated schedule is motivated by the urgency of having such a multi-domain system operating as early as possible, which is industrially feasible by modulating the baseline requirements that this initial version will fulfill.”
