The stand-up comes as the base prepares to accept the HH-60W Jolly Green II to modernize its aging rotary-wing fleet. For six decades, the 1st Helicopter Squadron served as the Air Force’s sole rotary-wing unit supporting high-priority transport and contingency missions in the Washington area. The newly formed 5th Helicopter Squadron creates dedicated capacity to absorb new airframes without interrupting ongoing daily security operations.
Lt. Col. Jonathan Bonilla assumed command as the initial commander of the 5th Helicopter Squadron during the formal activation ceremony. Base leadership selected this dual-squadron structure to execute a seamless operational transition while maintaining constant readiness for national leadership transport and regional support.
Transitioning to the HH-60W Jolly Green II introduces an advanced airframe engineered with superior speed, extended range, and increased payload capacity.
