AviationNews – The Federal Aviation Administration has awarded software developer Air Space Intelligence an $875 million contract to deploy artificial intelligence platforms across the entire United States airspace. Following years of commercial success with airline partners like Alaska Airlines, the technology will optimize flight routes, predict capacity bottlenecks, and drastically reduce travel delays nationwide.
Under the 12-year agreement, the FAA will integrate Air Space Intelligence’s platform into the Air Traffic Control System Command Center as part of a sweeping overhaul of national aviation infrastructure. The selection follows extensive real-world operational use by early launch partner Alaska Airlines, which utilized the developer’s Flyways AI system to assist dispatchers, optimize routes, and achieve a 3 to 5 percent reduction in fuel burn on long-haul flights. Major commercial carriers including Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, along with defense agencies, have since deployed the software to navigate dynamic flight constraints.
The contract centers on two core systems: Flow Management Data and Services (FMDS) and an embedded capability known as Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes, and Trajectories (SMART). These cloud-based platforms unify data streams covering weather, airport runway capacity, military airspace restrictions, and airline schedules into a single operational interface. Using predictive machine-learning models, the software evaluates potential traffic imbalances days and weeks in advance, recommending optimized routing strategies before aircraft ever push back from the gate.
Highlighting the operational impact of the modernization effort, FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford stated: “FMDS with the SMART capabilities will help us address that challenge by improving how we manage airspace before flights depart, reducing congestion, easing controller workload, and directly cutting down delays across the system.”
With initial deployment of the new system scheduled to begin this fall, the rollout marks a fundamental shift from reactive delay responses to proactive airspace management. To maximize the benefits of predictive routing, airlines and regional air traffic control centers must work in close coordination to adopt shared data standards and align their network operations.
The FAA’s selection of Air Space Intelligence delivers modern, data-driven tools to the world’s busiest air traffic management system. By replacing legacy paper logs and disparate software systems with a unified AI interface, the American aviation network will expand effective airspace capacity while curbing fuel burn and flight delays.
