American Airlines Operates First Commercial Passenger Flight Fueled by Synthetic eSAF from Corpus Christi to Dallas

AviationNews – American Airlines has successfully completed a historic commercial passenger flight powered by electro sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) from Corpus Christi to Dallas Fort Worth, marking a major milestone in decarbonizing air travel. The achievement demonstrates the first delivery of power-to-liquid synthetic jet fuel to a commercial airport for use in scheduled airline operations.

The flight utilized eSAF produced by clean-tech provider Infinium at its Pathfinder facility in Corpus Christi, Texas, which has operated as a commercial-scale power-to-liquids production site since 2023. The synthetic fuel batch was blended with conventional Jet A fuel and delivered directly into the common fuel storage tanks at Corpus Christi International Airport. To support the deployment of next-generation low-carbon fuels, American Airlines has also secured a long-term offtake agreement for commercial volumes from Infinium’s larger Project Roadrunner facility, backed by a partnership with Citi to address Scope 3 corporate travel emissions.

Unlike traditional sustainable aviation fuels derived from biological feedstocks, Infinium’s eSAF is produced by converting captured waste carbon dioxide and hydrogen generated from renewable electricity into drop-in synthetic hydrocarbons. Tested and certified to meet ASTM International specifications for Jet A, the blended e-fuel required zero modifications to the aircraft engines or airport distribution systems while cutting lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by more than 90 percent compared to conventional petroleum jet fuel.

Underscoring the operational significance of the achievement, American Airlines Chief Executive Officer Robert Isom stated: “This flight represents a significant moment for aviation. Through our partnership with Infinium, we’re demonstrating how next-generation technologies like eSAF can move from early investment to real-world application.”

While current global eSAF production remains limited, this commercial flight signals a transition from initial innovation to practical industry deployment. Infinium’s under-construction Project Roadrunner is scheduled to begin commercial-scale eSAF deliveries in 2027, with an expected annual capacity exceeding five million gallons. Airlines, fuel producers, and energy policymakers must now collaborate to expand power-to-liquids infrastructure, lower production costs, and accelerate the commercial availability of non-biological synthetic fuels to reach net-zero aviation targets.

The success of American Airlines’ eSAF-powered service confirms that synthetic drop-in fuels can integrate seamlessly into existing airport fueling systems without operational disruption. As commercial-scale production sites come online over the coming years, synthetic e-fuels offer one of the most promising long-term pathways toward scalable, low-carbon commercial aviation.
