Czech Developer Zuri Unveils Hybrid-Electric Uncrewed Cargo Tiltrotor for Civil and Defense Logistics

AviationNews – Prague-based developer Zuri has officially launched an uncrewed hybrid-electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) cargo aircraft engineered for demanding civil, offshore, and defense resupply missions. The new platform combines vertical agility with fixed-wing efficiency to bridge the logistical gap between short-range battery drones and high-cost crewed transport helicopters.

The development builds upon nine years of flight testing across more than 15 aircraft models and leverages Zuri’s full-scale Technology Demonstrator 2.0 (TD 2.0), currently undergoing systems integration and ground trials in Prague. Designed specifically to operate without runway infrastructure, the aircraft carries payloads of up to 145 kilograms, providing critical supply connections to remote forward operating bases, island networks, and offshore energy platforms. Commercial certification is planned through the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Specific category under the SORA framework, expediting the transition toward operational deployment.

Technically, the tiltrotor aircraft utilizes a hybrid-electric propulsion system featuring eight distributed rotors and a combustion-driven generator that powers flight while charging an onboard battery reserve. After lifting off vertically, the rotors tilt forward to transition into efficient wing-borne cruising at speeds up to 220 kilometers per hour, delivering a maximum design range of 679 kilometers (569 kilometers with a 30-minute reserve). In addition to a sealed internal cargo hold, an interchangeable belly pod accommodates auxiliary sensors or communication relay packages for extended intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) tasks spanning up to 1,908 kilometers.

“We spent nine years and more than fifteen aircraft teaching ourselves what this architecture can do,” said Michal Illich, founder and Chief Executive Officer of Zuri. “The uncrewed cargo VTOL is the first one we are building for someone else to fly, funding the demonstrator through its full flight test campaign and delivering practical capability directly to commercial and defense operators.”

Flight testing for the TD 2.0 demonstrator begins in early 2027, backed by a €6 million Series A tranche, with initial commercial deliveries scheduled between 2027 and 2029. Logistics providers, offshore operators, and defense planners seeking runway-independent transport assets can monitor these upcoming flight-envelope evaluations to integrate autonomous regional air freight into their supply networks.

Zuri’s hybrid tiltrotor represents a pragmatic, long-range solution to autonomous middle-mile distribution where battery-only designs fall short. By delivering multi-hundred-kilometer reach without fixed runways, the aircraft positions European autonomous aviation at the forefront of versatile special-mission and resupply operations.
