AviationNews – Airbus Helicopters has officially deployed its U030 Flexrotor uncrewed aerial system into operational service over the Baltic Sea to perform long-endurance maritime surveillance for the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA). The tactical drone deployment enhances regional maritime situational awareness across Northern Europe without requiring conventional airfield infrastructure.
The operational kickoff follows successful technical and regulatory validation flights conducted across coastal zones in Estonia, Latvia, and Finland. This deployment represents the first operational mission of the U030 Flexrotor in Europe under a €30 million framework contract awarded to Airbus Helicopters by EMSA in December 2025. Under the multi-year agreement, French operator Extensee flies the aircraft directly in the field, while Airbus manages overall program oversight and mission coordination with European civil protection authorities.
Designed as a small tactical vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) system, the 25-kilogram tail-sitting aircraft requires a launch footprint of just 3.7 by 3.7 meters, allowing crew members to launch and recover it directly from patrol vessels or tight coastal outposts. Capable of remaining airborne for up to 12 to 14 hours, the platform uses integrated electro-optical, infrared, and maritime radar sensors to stream high-definition surveillance data live to the EMSA RPAS Data Centre. This real-time intelligence feeds directly into national coast guard operations, including search and rescue, environmental monitoring, fisheries enforcement, and the detection of illicit maritime activity.
