Aviation News – Airbus Helicopters has officially handed over the first NH90 Standard 2 helicopter to the French Armament General Directorate (DGA), marking a major leap forward in European special operations capabilities.
The landmark delivery marks a crucial step in modernizing military aviation across Europe. Commissioned in 2020 through the NATO Helicopter Management Agency (NAHEMA), the program relies on the NHIndustries joint venture comprising Airbus Helicopters, Leonardo, and Fokker.
Under the procurement agreement, France ordered 18 NH90 Standard 2 units scheduled for complete delivery by mid-2029. The entire fleet will serve under the French Army Aviation’s special forces squadron based in Pau. Expanding international momentum, Spain joined the program in December 2025 by ordering 31 NH90s built to a similar advanced standard.
Tailored specifically for hostile mission environments, the NH90 Standard 2 incorporates key operational upgrades. The tactical transport platform integrates the Safran Euroflir 410D electro-optical system, a digital map generator, accommodations for a third crew member, and enlarged rear sliding windows designed to support defensive weaponry. Provisions also allow rapid integration of the upcoming Direct Aperture System (DAS) and digital Thales TopOwl helmet display, empowering flight crews with superior situational awareness in severe dust, fog, and nighttime conditions.
Highlighting the milestone, Matthieu Louvot, Chief Executive Officer of Airbus Helicopters, emphasized the operational impact of the new fleet: “We are honoured to deliver this NH90 Standard 2 to the French armed forces. This new standard builds upon the proven capabilities of the NH90 TTH with new breakthrough features designed specifically for special forces. More than ever, special forces operators will be able to execute their difficult missions in the toughest environments.”
This capability upgrade sets a blueprint for multinational defense cooperation and specialized tactical transport across NATO partner nations. As global defense forces adapt to demanding operational landscapes, military air arms continue prioritizing advanced multi-sensor integration and night-vision flight assistance.
The successful handover of the initial NH90 Standard 2 reinforces France’s tactical edge during complex operations. With full delivery continuing through mid-2029, the fleet provides a standard for allied special forces aviation.
